Shaky Hands Video, 7/16/07 At The Silo

The best live band I’ve seen since CSS is Portland’s own the Shaky Hands, who I was privileged to catch recently at a new venue and recording studio called The Silo. The band was energized and charming in their delivery of the best collection of songs I’ve heard on one stage in… well, let’s just say I’m becoming a fan. Lead singer Nick Delffs’ catchy vocals and hooks owe a debt to understated pop masters like Van Morrison and the Violent Femmes, while overall the band seems dialed in to the stomping fun of Portland’s American roots revival, or whatever it’s to be called.

Their self-titled debut album is jangly, direct in its production, and incredibly promising. Why bands like The Shaky Hands and fellow Portland natives Blitzen Trapper feel so refreshing to me is because they’re closer to a place where sentiment and lyrical content coalesce with and make sense of the music. Instead of being yanked up into a tornado of emotion and sound and then summarily dropped back into the trailer park, I’m able to weather the storm just fine on my porch swing. That is, on my roommate Ashod’s porch swing.

Here’s a video from the 7/16/07 Silo show. I mistakingly thought I didn’t get a solid clip, which is why it’s taken me awhile to post this. I was excited to find out I was wrong! I’m still working with an inexpensive digital camera, so put your lo-fi pants on.
