Richard Taruskin, who has been called the foremost American intellectual on music, will be speaking for free at The Crystal Ballroom [Clarification: this is the Benson Hotel's Crystal Ballroom at 309 SW Broadway, not the McMenamins venue on Burnside.] Thursday May 15, 2008. Taruskin has won numerous awards, been a regular contributor to The New York Times and The New Republic, and written among other books The Oxford History of Western Music in 6 volumes.
There is a reception at 5:30 PM and Taruskin is to speak at 6:30, where he will address the subject of censorship in music. Taruskin is known as being controversial and combative, so it’s doubtful this will be purely a lamentation on behalf of unfairly censored artists. To the contrary, Taruskin will present various censored pieces and ask the question of whether censorship is always a bad thing.
