Defend Oregon — No On Measures 58-64
October 3, 2008 2:56 pm6 years ago a jury of Oregonians found that right-wing activist Bill Sizemore had committed fraud, forgery, and racketeering. The case awarded the OEA (Oregon Education Association) and the AFT-Oregon (American Federation of Teachers – Oregon) $2.5 million in damagers and $1 million in attorney fees, and barred Sizemore from signature gathering activities.
Sizemore was not barred from all political activities, however, and so he continues his work on ballot initiatives. This November, Oregonians will vote on 7 right-wing ballot measures, most of which are the work of Sizemore. In fact, only measures 61 and 62 do not include Bill Sizemore’s name on the chief petitioners list, and those measures are in large part the work of Democrat-turned-Republican, crime-obsessed Kevin Mannix.
The 7 ballot measures Democrats and progressives (hell, anyone) should be voting NO on include:
Measure 58
Limits classes taught in foreign languages for English as a second language students to 2 years per student — a one-size-fits-all mandate to limit English learning.
Measure 59
Cuts $2.4 billion in funds to pay for state police, education, public safety, and health care, while providing tax breaks only for the wealthiest Oregonians.
Measure 60
Bases teachers’ pay solely on undefined “classroom performance,” rather than qualifications, experience, or education.
Measure 61
Imposes mandatory minimum sentences for non-violent crimes; does not require treatment for drug-addicted offenders.
Measure 62
Diverts 15% of dedicated lottery funds away from the State School Fund to pay for Kevin Mannix’s pet projects.
Measure 63
Allows property owners to make building improvements without important safety inspections or building permits.
Measure 64
Prohibits public employees from using voluntary payroll deductions to donate to non-profits, charities, unions, and organizations of their choice.
