The Rumble is a national rock show that recently branched out to Portland. My band played the last event, and it was a blast. The shows are always free, although this next one says “limited space” so get to Cravedog early.

Cute, Deadly Portland Cream

Between his accessible book Reading Comics and delightfully sophisticated reviews, Portland writer, Douglas Wolk, makes comics fun even for intellectual snobs.

Douglas carries a sketchbook around with him, especially to conventions (such as the recent horrorshow of San Diego Comic-Con) and asks artists to draw in it. I have to share this recent work by Portland comics artist, Indigo Kelleigh, featuring the Portland Cream by Voodoo Doughnuts.

There’s a lot going on this Saturday, June 11th. In order of scheduling:

1. Flea Market at Voodoo Two

The second Voodoo Doughnuts, the one in NE, is having flea market. What sort of cheap nicknacks do you buy in a doughnut vendor’s parking lot?

10am – 4pm
Voodoo Donuts Too
NE 15th and Sandy
Portland, OR

2. Mississippi Street Fair: Glory to NoPo
Live music! Vendors! Ice cream! Wine!
10am-9pm

3. 3rd Annual Bastille Day Block Party
Another epicenter of sweet treats is having an event. This year the theme is “Gastronomical Oregon.” For a dessert place, they’re hosting an odd number of events that require physical activity. A mini marathon, with pit stops for wine tasting. A bicycle scavenger hunt (leaving from the SE Pix). A waiter race. Grape stomp. Some attractions require preregistration and a fee. Most require a nonperishable food donation for the Oregon Food Bank.
The Bastille Day seems to go from 11am-11pm.
3901 N Williams Ave

4. Trek In the Park: Actors performing Star Trek.

5. Night Ride: a benefit for the BTA

Amanda Palmer and Jason Webley

Amanda Palmer (of the Dresden Dolls) is in town. The night before last she invited fans to go with her to the strip club Mary’s via Twitter. Last night she welcomed anyone who wanted to join her for a ukulele concert in the north Park blocks.

Around 70 people got the word and joined her in the grass. I arrived for the last three songs which were a sweet piece about her childhood home, a cover of Two-Headed Boy (by Neutral Milk Hotel), and a cover of Creep (by Radiohead). Just as she was singing “You’re so fucking special,” a woman in a long green floral dress and a beaded antler headdress waltzed into the crowd.

Amanda later wore the headdress in a photoshoot with Jason Webley on the stacked-elephant statue. She and Jason performed “Elephant, Elephant” from their joint music project Evelyn Evelyn on top of the elephant.

Amanda Palmer has created a book with Neil Gaiman. (The two were introduced by Jason Webley.) Amanda collected staged photos of her death and Neil wrote stories to go along. Who Killed Amanda Palmer: A Collection of Photographic Evidence is available on her website. After the music in the park, Amanda put Neil on speakerphone for her admirers to hear. One fangirl was so overwhelmed with multiple nerdgasms that she turned bright red and hyperventilated.
