Crispin Glover at Clinton Street Theater 1/27/08
January 29, 2008 2:43 amI first saw Crispin Glover as I imagine most everyone else who loves movies first did — as George McFly in the 1980′s blockbuster Back To The Future. Glover’s portrayal of the awkward wimp-turned-bully-leveler McFly was a treat that probably inducted him into a generation of budding film geeks’ hearts.
Since 1985, I’ve come into occasional and happy contact with Glover’s work, like being force fed the fantastical buddy flick Ruben and Ed (trailer); Glover’s comically strange music; and one of my favorite cameos: his appearance as the black-faced, foreboding boilerman opposite Johnny Depp in Jim Jarmusch’s Dead Man.
Glover appeared in Portland for several nights (Jan. 26th-28th, 2008) at Clinton Street Theater, where he performed and showed the first two films in a trilogy he’s making. I caught the show on the 27th, where he read and presented slides from several of his books (some real, some perhaps imagined), played the first movie in his trilogy, What Is It?, and took questions from the ample audience of students, film geeks, and generally curious types.
