Trek In the Park 2010

I went to see Trek In the Park yesterday. I got there late. I can’t tell you whether it was awesome or sucked. There were so many people. I found a patch of grass too far away to hear, at the backs of the actors with the sun in my eyes. People up closer were laughing.

I found this fan art by Bill Mudron and Mike Russell through Comics Alliance.

Bill Mudron had a very clever print of the Arrested Development cast in Peanuts style.

Band Mates- adorable stuffed instruments. They also have a web comic. Don’t think I’d call the comic clever, but I’m into plush instruments.

Stumptown Comics Fest 2010 Part 3

A short post!

Tony from LA and Wes from PDX. I approve of their web comic.

David Cheslea photographs me, or perhaps records me, while I photograph him. He did this casually, like it was perfectly normal.

I would like to reassert my loyalty to Kenan Rubenstein, and his bold, stark inking and poignant, self-deprecating stories. He’s from Brooklyn but he probably should live here.

Stumptown Comics Fest!

I took a lot of pictures at the Stumptown Comics Fest this weekend. I’m going to upload them in batches due to time constraints and to keep from intimidating anyone with a huge post.

Monica Gallagher with Boobage, a tale of a flat-chested consternation. She also has a comic on roller girls. Read her stuff at www.eatyourlipstick.com. The man next to her was Michael J. Dimotta from Portland, who made a really adorable short comic about Rupert, a goldfish determined to borrow a car.

Aaron Colter of Dark Horse Comics.

Tim Batiuk (Portland) with Boto, his comic about the pink Amazon River Dolphin.

Devon Devereaux (Portland)

Chris Bolton (Portland) and Kyle Bolton (Seattle)

Local Heroes, Villains Cease Fire to Benefit Homeless Youth

September 29, 2009 4:11 pm
   by Lauren Hudgins

Portland, Oregon, September 29, 2009: The heroes and villains of our fair Portlandia have once more agreed to set aside their petty differences for a single night… and gather together for the betterment of their community!

The Alter Egos Society is excited to announce our 3rd Annual Hero/Villain Ceasefire, a fundraising event on Saturday, October 10, 2009, from 7 p.m. to midnight. The evening, co-hosted by The Society’s most heroic Mister Marvelous and the rather sinister Purr-tender, will be held for the second year at the p:ear Gallery, located at 338 NW 6th Avenue in Portland. All attendees–be they hero, villain, or chaotic neutral–are asked to pay a cover of $5, with proceeds from the evening’s door, games, and merchandising benefiting p:ear.

Highlights for the event include:

· a screening of “Archives of the Fantastic: The Ninth Cosmic Convergence”, The Society’s original short film (approximately 50 minutes)

· music by DJ Ghostdad and a surprise live band

· vending of food and drink

· a Phone-Booth-To-The-Future, letting costumed adventurers record a video message to send to the future (and maybe the Internet)

· school carnival-themed game booths and costume contest, with PRIZES!

o Prizes provided by Dark Horse Comics, Bridge City Comics, Guardian Games, and many more!

The Alter Egos Society is made up of intrepid superhero enthusiasts, artists, and functional nerds who put on events for creative expression… and the chance to wear tights in public (for the greater good, obviously). The group was conceived as a plan to throw one killer superhero-themed house party, and evolved to become the community supporter it is today. We coordinate multiple annual events to raise money for p:ear (www.pearmentor.org), a local organization that works to better the lives of at-risk and homeless youth.

Get your Geek on at the… Hilton?

August 30, 2009 9:28 pm
   by Tina Armstrong

As Labor Day approaches, you may be finding yourself with some free time on your hands. What better way to fill it than with a trip to the ritzy downtown hotel for a weekend of bizarrely dressed, and sometimes scantily clad, anime (Japanese animation) fanatics at Kumoricon?

Kumoricon08

Weeaboos, gamers, and geeks collide at this three day event at the Hilton on SW 6th and Salmon St. for the Labor Day weekend. Live chess, anime screenings, a miniskirt army, a cosplay (essentially costume role play) swimsuit competition, karaoke, writing and art workshops, an enormous exhibitors hall, an art auction benefiting the local organization p:ear, video and card games, sake tasting for the over-21 crowd, and even a Chibiroom for the youngsters are only a few of the distractions offered at Kumoricon. Check out the complete list of activities and events HERE!

Popular guests such as Kirk Thornton and Last Stop Tokyo, a masquerade, concerts, maid service, and random bouts of swordplay on the street generously help the effort to keep bringing Kumoricon back- in this year’s case, for the seventh year in a row. Kumoricon is expecting over 5000 attendees this year, a fair percentage of whom arrive incognito as characters of fictional series- everything from Cowboy Bebop and Pokemon to Harry Potter and Star Wars. Fun and family friendly, it’s one of the countless events that Keeps Portland Weird.

If any of those activities captured your attention, give it a shot. However, don’t be deterred by the young crowd. Bring a friend, have a laugh, enjoy the view, and, if you’re a “noob” to the anime scene, experience something new and potentially psychologically scarring! Oh, and one more thing: do not forget your camera. If you’re ever the daredevil, throw on that ol’ pirate shirt and boots… you’ll stand out more dressed in jeans and a t-shirt.

For schedule and registration details, check out the Kumoricon homepage.

Tasty Bullet Release Party

August 19, 2009 4:44 pm
   by Lauren Hudgins

Presented by Floating World Comics & the Pander Bros.

Voicebox Karaoke Lounge – 2112 NW Hoyt, PDX
Thu, 8/20 – 7pm til late – 21+ and over only

Sing your heart out in private karaoke rooms, Tokyo style! Comics by Floating World! Wear pink and get a free sketch!

Arnold Pander and Jon Vankin will expose the conspiracy behind Tasty Bullet and the mysterious “Tasty Girl” to the world this summer. A new chapter in Manga graphic novels begins as Image Comics releases the long-awaited new graphic novel, TASTY BULLET!

TASTY BULLET mines the darker side of the worldwide energy drink phenomenon, with an amped up tale of redemption and revenge.

I will be at Street of Dreams tomorrow night, but I’m going to try to hit up this party later on. I have long been suspicious those noxious energy drinks and their liquid Flintstones taste.
