Punch Brothers

The mandolin player for Punch Brothers looks like Jude Law from i ♥ huckabees, when Law’s character goes crazy. Chris Thile gyrates from the waist up when he plays.

Generally considered a bluegrass band, Punch Brothers plucked a hypnotic cover of Radiohead’s “Kid A” on the main stage at Pickathon.

“I’m Bonnie Prince Billy. We’re happy to serve you tonight. If you have any complaints or suggestions just think about those for a while. Think about them in your sleeping bags. Think about whether you’d like them said to you after you just played a show.”

Pickathon 2010 From the Air

Guildworks created the stunning stretched fabric patterns over our heads at Pickathon. They allowed us to go 72 feet in the air (safely harnessed in) on the same cherry pickers used to hang the lines between trees. Yes, there were many jokes about getting high at Pickathon. We have gorgeous images from both day and night.

The City Repair Dome at Pickathon

The City Repair Project built a geodesic dome in the woods at Pickathon, stringing little white and blue lights on a pinnacle. It was a space for musicians who were not on stage to meet and play together. They also provided a ridiculous amount of free food, primarily produce. Although there were many delicious and tempting concession carts, the dome was the only way to keep both a full stomach and cash in pocket. Organically Grown donated boxes and boxes of fruits and vegetables for City Repair to feed festival participants. When possible, Dome attendants cooked meals and blended smoothies to share.

Dandy Warhols Ride

The past two weeks, Portland has been celebrating Pedalpalooza, our bike fun festival. On Monday I went on the Dandy Warhols ride, which toured sites where the band members lived, practiced, and filmed music videos. We had a child’s trailer with a sound system blaring Dandy Warhols out the back. Zia McCabe, the keyboardist (aka around town as DJ Rescue) came along for the ride.

We began at Ladd’s Addition. Zia is the one with the brown/purple hair.

Somewhere in the middle we stopped at Slabtown to watch Dandy Warhols music videos.

We finished at Dante’s for a karaoke battle of “Bohemian Like You” and stayed for munchies and a round of karaoke From Hell with a live band. I came in second place in the Dandy Warhols karaoke contest, winning a t-shirt. Zia DJed later that night, but I left too early.
