Well, how do you like that? From pictures, it looks like you got sun for the Friday of Pedalpalooza while I just got overcast and smog in CA.

The first Saturday of Pedalpalooza is prime time for exciting bikey events.

CIRQUE DU CYCLING
Mississippi Avenue, N Failing St and Mississippi Ave
12:00pm – 8:00pm, All day bike fun!

STAR WARS VS. STAR TREK RIDE
OMSI, 1945 SE Water Ave, Portland Take
7:00pm, We ride until I say it’s over

Time to choose sides. Do you think Han Solo can kick Kirk’s ass? Would Spock take down Yoda? Time to get your light sabres or tricorders and dress up for some serious nerd quotient. Decorate yourselves and/or your bikes and battle it out on the streets of Portland, the skies over Endor, and wherever else the ride takes us. Sound systems invited, kids welcome for the early part of the ride, but later on, the silliness may get too much for them. This ride is free, but we understand Starfleet Academy might assess penalties.

Meet at the Portland Rock Gym on E. 12th and Burnside for a quick ride to the pub (HUB or Apex) and back for an OUTDOOR “bike in movie” screening of PW’s Big Adventure at 10pm. We will make a small fire, smore’s anyone?

Taste of the Nation Review

May 4, 2010 5:56 pm
   by Lauren Hudgins

Taste of the Nation is a national fundraising campaign to end childhood hunger, traveling from city to city, benefitting community organizations and showcasing prominent local restaurants. Proceeds from this year’s ticket sales and silent auction went to St. Vincent de Paul, the Oregon Hunger Task Force, the Oregon Food Bank, and Klamath-Lake Counties Food Bank.

Guests were invited to sample foods, desserts, wines, and other beverages from participating regional establishments. Here are the night’s best. I am a vegetarian but my photographer, Dominik Kolendo is a ferocious omnivore and voracious sampler of foods.

My Recommendations:

Accanto
- Nettle pesto, olive tapenade, and mozzarella. Deliciously garlicky pesto.

nel centro- Homemade cracker and homemade cottage cheese with roasted red bell pepper

Charlie’s Produce- Creamy pesto pasta

Like last year, one of my only complaints about TOTN is that there weren’t many vegetarian options. However, like last year, I still stuffed myself until the thought of eating became unpleasant.

Dominik’s Meaty Recommendations:

Bamboo Sushi- MSC certified Oregon Coast albacore in sweet soy marinade, lightly torched

Davis Street Tavern- Seared Muscovy duck breast with apricot chutney and watercress on brioche

Ruth’s Chris Steak House- “Very soft perfectly cooked, nice pink steak!”

The Allison- Pork belly with truffle and apple salad and pickled ramps. This made Dominik extremely happy and he hates apples.

Screen Door- Oregon Bay shrimp with micro-basil and white remoulade

Waffle Window on Hawthorne- Ham and cheese waffle

Delilah’s Catering- Tuna tartar in wasabi miso

Laurelhurst Market- Steak tartar with a touch of vodka

Beverages:

Dry Soda- I already love their lemongrass and rhubarb sodas. At TOTN I got to try the juniper berry soda. It was surprisingly delicate and not at all like gin, as I would have expected.

Accanto- A cocktail with Finlanida Vodka (usually Stoli citrus), fresh carrot juice, toasted cumin, simple syrup. The rim was sugared with a bit of cayenne.

Apolloni Vineyards- 2008 Viognier. A bit sweet but really amazing apricot flavor.

Methven- 2007 Pinot Gris

Oak Knoll- Niagra. This really tastes like the skin and fruit of grapes. It made me think about being 8 and sitting underneath my babysitter’s grape vine after school (except with a high alcohol content).

Lange Estate Winery- 2008 Chardonnay from the Freedom Hill Vineyard

Argyle Winery- 2007 Argyle Brut Rosé. I was looking for remarkable sparking wine. This one was sharp and juicy, without a heavy sweetness.

Desserts:

Bugatti’s- Praline cannoli with dried cherry, chocolate, pistachio and candied orange peel.

I always have an undying faith for Saint Cupcake and an extreme fondness for Ruby Jewel Treats.

One Week Till Taste of the Nation!

April 19, 2010 10:52 pm
   by Lauren Hudgins

There was pleanty of asparagus soup from Wildwood.

The premiere food sampling event, Taste of the Nation, comes to Portland next Monday, April 26th at the LUXE Autohaus.

The local food and drink establishments are there to impress you! Last year featured the most amazing bite-sized morsels from nearby restaurants and dessert places and delicious tastes of regional wines and beers. I learned more about what Portland’s restaurants and bars have to offer in one night than in the seven years I have lived in the city.

Taste of the Nation is a culinary benefit to end nationwide childhood hunger. Funds raised from the 2009 Portland Taste of the Nation went to the Oregon Food Bank, Klamath-Lake Counties Food Bank, St. Vincent de Paul Food Recovery Program, and The Oregon Hunger Relief Task Force. By purchasing a ticket to Taste of the Nation, you are making a contribution to the food supply for needy families.

Taste of the Nation – Portland LUXE Ticket Admission 5:00 – 9:00 PM
$175

Taste of the Nation – Portland VIP Admission 5:30 – 9:00 PM
$125, $135 at door

Taste of the Nation – Portland General Admission 6:30 – 9:00 PM
