Portland’s Best Dressed Man

September 9, 2010 6:06 pm
   by Lauren Hudgins

And hilarity ensues.

Men’s personal shopping and image consulting company, LKc Style, is hosting the Portland’s Best Dressed Man Contest of 2010. Portland, usually known as the land of casual and comfy, does also have some very snappy dressers from GQ to hipster that should be entered into the contest. Nominations and voting will be done entirely by the public. Anyone can send in a photo of their Best Dressed Man along with a brief description of why they should win the contest! Voting will take place just before Portland Fashion Week starting September 25. And the winner will be announced during Fashion Week. The highly rated and always hip Saucebox will host the contest party on Saturday, October 9 which will also be open to the public.

Clothing, salon, and product prizes will be awarded by the Contest sponsors: Collier, Pureology, Hair M, and Sock It To Me and more!

Details here.

Soul Night Institutes a Dress Code

January 12, 2010 1:42 pm
   by Mike Burnett

DJ Beyonda’s Soul Night has been a huge night in Portland for 3 years now. Every second Thursday of each month the inevitable line to get into Rotture’s second story space stretches down the stairs and out under the fluorescent streetlights of Portland’s inner SE warehouse district.

The space is a popular venue for larger acts and touring bands, but it’s also a gay friendly club that hosts local unsigned bands, experimental noise, and all flavors of electronica. This belies the fact that Soul Night has turned into something other than an event for appreciators of soul music and their friends; it’s turned into a come-one-come-all party.

In an attempt to keep out the “douche bags”, DJ Beyonda is trying an experiment for the first Soul Night of 2010.

The dress code will honor sharply dressed people (suits, shirt tie leather jacket, dress shoes or boots, dresses, skirts, mod or rocknroll style) the usual $3 cover charge. Those who choose to not participate in the theme (by wearing beenies, hoodies, baseball caps, tennis shoes, baggy pants, and overtly casual dress) will pay a $10 cover charge.

I have been to my share of Soul Nights, and while standing outside on Rotture’s upstairs patio in a sea of people it has felt like a crucial part of living in Portland. The great view of the city doesn’t hurt. However, I have seen the charm of the event fading as it becomes even more crowded and even less focused. I hope the dress code will sharpen everyone’s game and return some intimacy to the event. And I can’t help but see this as a cultural milestone in Portland’s big city adolescence.

Portland Fashion Week

Portland Fashion Week
Portland Fashion Week is coming up soon. VERY soon. This Wednesday.

Most designers hail from Portland or the nearby Pacific Northwest, but some international designers have been recruited from as far away as Pakistan and New Zealand (wool, of course).

Portland has a lot of creative talent that deserves attention. It obviously doesn’t get enough. PFW is still using Leanne Marshall, winner in season 5 of Project Runway, as its claim to fame, although her last participation was PFW 2007.

As fall sets in and it’s getting colder, I am looking forward to seeing the latest Portland has to offer in coats. Amai Unmei will be showing her marvelous collection on Friday, October 9.

On Saturday, PFW has two shows, the matinee is quintessentially Portland, titled “Ready to Roll.” Presented by Momentum Magazine, 28 companies and designers will be introducing their most bike friendly products. This daytime show is also a benefit for Oregon Manifest.

Sunday’s theme is “Green and Sustainable Designer Shows & Programs” but I can’t find much information about what makes it so. A few of the designers boast using “sustainable” material.

Get your Geek on at the… Hilton?

As Labor Day approaches, you may be finding yourself with some free time on your hands. What better way to fill it than with a trip to the ritzy downtown hotel for a weekend of bizarrely dressed, and sometimes scantily clad, anime (Japanese animation) fanatics at Kumoricon?

Weeaboos, gamers, and geeks collide at this three day event at the Hilton on SW 6th and Salmon St. for the Labor Day weekend. Live chess, anime screenings, a miniskirt army, a cosplay (essentially costume role play) swimsuit competition, karaoke, writing and art workshops, an enormous exhibitors hall, an art auction benefiting the local organization p:ear, video and card games, sake tasting for the over-21 crowd, and even a Chibiroom for the youngsters are only a few of the distractions offered at Kumoricon. Check out the complete list of activities and events HERE!

Popular guests such as Kirk Thornton and Last Stop Tokyo, a masquerade, concerts, maid service, and random bouts of swordplay on the street generously help the effort to keep bringing Kumoricon back- in this year’s case, for the seventh year in a row. Kumoricon is expecting over 5000 attendees this year, a fair percentage of whom arrive incognito as characters of fictional series- everything from Cowboy Bebop and Pokemon to Harry Potter and Star Wars. Fun and family friendly, it’s one of the countless events that Keeps Portland Weird.

If any of those activities captured your attention, give it a shot. However, don’t be deterred by the young crowd. Bring a friend, have a laugh, enjoy the view, and, if you’re a “noob” to the anime scene, experience something new and potentially psychologically scarring! Oh, and one more thing: do not forget your camera. If you’re ever the daredevil, throw on that ol’ pirate shirt and boots… you’ll stand out more dressed in jeans and a t-shirt.

For schedule and registration details, check out the Kumoricon homepage.
